See Johnny Greaves for the American off-road racer (racer) Johnny Greaves (born 1941 in Australia) is a former rugby league footballer who played for the St. George Dragons, Canterbury Bulldogs, New South Wales, and Australia. Renown United was Greaves’ junior club. Greaves, like Brian James, began his career with the St George Dragons, where he was a local youngster. Greaves competed for a spot in the Dragons’ star-studded line-up, which included Reg Gasnier, Billy Smith, and Johnny Riley. Despite this, Greaves made 23 first-team appearances during his two years at the club.  He moved to Canterbury, where he became a first-grade regular and was selected for New South Wales in 1966 and Australia in the two Tests of the home Ashes series against Great Britain later that year. He was part of the Canterbury team that knocked St George out of the 1967 final, ending the Dragons’ record-breaking run, but a week later he got the igominy as the man left to chase down Bob McCarthy in the 1967 Grand Final after Greave’s was waiting for a pass from his hooker Col Brown that McCarthy intercepted, changing the course of the game and deciding the premiership. He was chosen for the 1967 Kangaroo tour, when he played in four Tests and 10 minor matches against Great Britain and France. He was a part of Australia’s World Cup-winning team in 1968.
